Weekly Produce Box

A weekly supply of fresh living foods + recipes & nutrition advice to help you make the most of them.

Living foods form the foundation of the Alter diet. Comprised mainly of fresh vegetables and fruits, living foods not only provide essential nutrients, water and fiber, but also (we believe) vital contact with one’s environment. Fresh, local, seasonal, organic foods nourish a healthy gastrointestinal tract and immune system; support adaptation to place(environment) and time (season); and promote greater life force/ vital energy.

Boxes will be available for pickup each Tuesday from early afternoon to evening. Each Box provides one person with a week’s supply of the best fresh fruits and vegetables that we can obtain from local farms. From week to week, we'll balance keeping a tight radius of local suppliers with providing a good variety of foods.
In our produce boxes this week:

Strawberries, Driscoll (Watsonville)
Minneola Tangelos, Sundance (Oceanside)
Cilantro, Tutti Frutti (Lompoc)
Spring mix, NewStar (Salinas)
Sugar snap peas, Riverdog (Guinda)
Cluster tomatoes, Cedar (Pioneer)
Collards, CalOrganics (Lamont)
Yellow Onion, Peri  (Firebaugh)

Yesterday we made Brisket & Onions in the slow cooker, with a big beef brisket from Tara Firma.  We've done several cuts of meat using this same simple recipe, just varying the time for the size of the cut.

*Today I asked for the same strawberries we had last week from Givens, but they were out & offered some from Limited Edition, which are usually grown in Watsonville-- but I guess it's early in the season for them to grow up here, and I see on the package that they are a product of Mexico.  Apologies for my lack of diligence!

This week we're going to make a bunch of this Cauliflower pretend-Mashed Potato recipe--
otherwise, salads!!

Spring is here, so is fruit!  Plus lots of greens to brighten the grey days.

Fuerte Avocado, Cunningham (Fallbrook)
Strawberries!!!, Givens (Santa Barbara)
Moro Blood Oranges, Sundance (Oceanside)
Asparagus, Coastal View Produce (Gonzales)
Lacinato Kale, Heger (Santa Maria)
Cilantro, Lakeside (Watsonville)
Spring Mix, Taylor (Salinas)

The asparagus is small and so will cook quickly & be very tender.  Steam it, melt some butter on it, squeeze some lemon juice (or blood orange?) over it, and be happy.
